Curriculum

We have put together a selection of subjects for you to choose which are as varied and different as you are! We hope that you will find a combination of subjects that you like, you are good at and that you need for your future. It is important that you consider what is in the course, how it will be assessed and where it might lead you. If we do not get enough of you choosing a subject we may ask you to choose another, but we will do our best to help you have a great Key Stage 4 and Post 16.

Pupils are placed into mixed prior attainment groups from their first lesson in September. In addition, we have two systems in place to support and challenge: Pupils who did not reach the expected standard at Key Stage 2 have an extra lesson of maths per fortnight. Pupils who attained greater than 110 at Key Stage 2 are placed into an accelerated group. The membership of this group is reviewed termly. This allows the opportunity for pupils to move in or out of this group as the need arises.

All groups rotate around a carousel of activities. Generally, 3 weeks per activity. It takes 2 ½ terms to complete a rotation. Many sports are repeated in subsequent years, but the standard of play, knowledge of the rules, ability to officiate are all at a higher level. The skills are developed and built upon. Boys and girls are taught separately and the activities in curriculum time are not always the same for boys and girls

Wherever possible, regardless of adverse weather, teachers will endeavour to ensure a practical lesson happens. This will lead to alternative activities, where the pupils are still active, making decisions, collaborating, leading, working with pupils they don’t usually work with

In Year 7 pupils are set. The first six lessons in September are ‘Multi-skills/activities’ and help the PE teachers to realise the skills that different pupils will work on. The pupils are grouped according to their sporting ability and everyone is taught at a level that will allow them to progress.

In Year 8 pupils continue to be set.

In Year 9, currently the girls’ are mixed ability and this is working very well to encourage full involvement and progress by all. The boys are set more according to ability and range of interest in the various activities. These groups/decisions are being closely monitored.

There is room for movement between the boys’ and girls’ classes throughout the year, as the teachers discuss. There is much discussion each year about groupings, according to the particular cohorts and our knowledge of how they work.
